Art Education Matters Because:
-
Art permeates many aspects of our lives.
-
The world influences and is influenced by art.
-
It is important to think critically about the visuals we see and push for positive change.
-
Art is a visual language that can foster a better understanding of ourselves, one another, and the world.

My Teaching Philosophy:
As an art educator, it is both my privilege and responsibility to help guide students as they grow to more consciously interact with the visual culture that surrounds us. I believe that curriculum should be centered around the kinds of art that students see and find relevant. Honoring students’ voices and their knowledge in all its forms, is part of how I can help them become the people they want to be.
That development is also supported by moments of failure, which I see as both positive and necessary. My students are encouraged to experiment, to play, and to change as they grow in their artistic voice. It is therefore critical that I provide a safe, trusting learning environment that fosters a growth mindset.
For this to occur, my classroom must be a place where students’ well-being and emotional health is paramount. As an educator, I continually reflect on and address my own biases about art, knowledge, culture, and standards. My classroom is a space where racism, sexism, classism, ableism, homophobia, and transphobia are challenged to ensure all students feel safe.
I have high expectations for my students and will be with them as they continue to take action changing the world with curious minds and compassionate hearts.
